Lately, many people find themselves wondering what on earth CBD oil is since it is a hot topic in our country. We’re going to give a quick botany lesson, just in case you haven’t been reading up on it like we have.
CBD, scientifically known as Cannabidiol, comes from the Cannabis plant genus. For those of you wracking your brain to remember classifications, allow us to refresh your memory: it goes kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica are the two different species under the Cannabis genus. The Marijuana and Hemp plants, which you probably thought were the same thing, are of the Sativa species, but certain strains of Marijuana are Indica.
So, what is CBD?
Cannabis, at the genus level, contains a variety of different compounds called Cannabinoids. The two most dominant are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive agent- the part of the plan that gives you a high, thus becoming the entire reason Cannabis was classified as a drug and made illegal for so long.
CBD (Cannabidiol), on the other hand, is the compound in Cannabis that has the healing properties people speak of when referring to medical marijuana or hemp health products. It is not psychoactive and is known to aid the body in naturally producing Cannabinoids that can reduce inflammation, soothe irritation, improve moods, counteract cortisol (the stress hormone), and so on.
CBD oils are primarily extracted from the hemp plant (THC levels are lower in hemp). Some still contain small amounts of THC, but CBD actually counteracts the small amounts remaining so you don’t need to worry about getting high. If this does concern you, you can easily find CBD oils that are 100% THC free.
Is CBD Legal in Michigan?
In 2008, Michigan became the 13th state to legalize medical marijuana. In 2017, voters petitioned to get recreational marijuana on the 2018 ballot. Prior to voting on the matter, many cities had already decriminalized marijuana because it wasn’t a threat to public safety.
Furthermore, you have probably heard that on November 6, 2018, Michigan voters chose to legalize recreational marijuana. By 2020, the state will have regulated stores where residents can purchase Cannabis as they wish.
Does this mean that CBD is legal in Michigan as well? Most would assume yes, especially now that you know what we taught you above about the composition of Cannabis. However, it took some work from State Representative Steve Johnson to clarify things and make sure CBD was protected by state law.
Rep. Johnson cleared everything up in January. He shared with the public that the legislation that protects the use of CBD has been signed into law. It falls under the industrial hemp category, which has, to our knowledge, always been legal in the U.S. The law determines that CBD is not the same as marijuana and will not be subject to the same restrictions.
The final verdict: CBD is completely legal in the state of Michigan.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, shop away, friends! Have a nice day!
